W & M Chem.:Robert Boyle was a contemporary of Sir Isaac Newton and fellow member of The Royal Society. Boyle is often named the father of modern chemistry because of his rejection of the theories of alchemists and his espousal of atomism. He discovered the ideal gas law (pressure & volume of an ideal gas are directly proportional to temperature) and left his estate to the throne in 1692. His generous gift allowed King William III & Queen William II to establish the anglican seminary known in the modern era as The College of William and Mary. His legacy of scientific research continues to the present as evidenced by the faculty, facilities, and undergraduate research documented by this website.
